Not many know that P Ibrahim, a relative of Pakistan's founder Muhammad Ali Jinnah, once headed the Bai Hirbai Rahimbai Aloo Paroo & Bai Kesarbai Dharamsay Khakoo Charitable and Religious Trust that owns the ill-fated Kesarbai Manson in Dongri. A simple plaque at Aloo Paroo building on a crowded street near Imam Hussain Chowk in Dongri merely bears the name of the trust.
Hidden under piles of papers and files at the trust's Dongri office, though, are some fascinating facts. Aloo Paroo, an Ismaili Khoja businessman and philanthropist, created a trust in 1883, which had three names on it: His mother-in-law Bai Hirbai Rahimbahi, his own (Aloo Paroo) and his daughter Bai Kesarbai Dharamsay Khakoo. This trust was registered in 1921 and it went on to build Kesarbai Mansion in 1934. The illegal wing which collapsed on Tuesday was constructed between 1992 and 1994.
The trust deed says it would work for the welfare of Ismaili Khojas, Shia Khojas and Sunni Khojas. "The trust was initially headed by P Ibrahim, a relative of Jinnah.
