Most Khojas originated from the Hindu Lohana merchant "jati" in India and carried on this trading activity wherever they moved. They were part of the vast global trading network spawned by the British Empire by being either importers, exporters and wholesalers or owners of retail shops and in Africa, were often called dukawallas.
