School Drama Performance 'A Passage To India' a play by Santa Rama Rao based on a book by E. M. Foster. From Left: Rapheal Emmanuel(Ronnie Heaslop); Yasmin Ratansi (Mrs Moore);Iqbal Dewji (Dr. Aziz);Adil Hassam(Prof. Godbole). The magistrate in E.M. Forster's A Passage to India is Ronny Heaslop, the British city magistrate of Chandrapore and the son of Mrs. Moore. Though not inherently a bad person, he has adopted the rigid and prejudiced attitudes common among the English colonial elite in India. He is often described as self-righteous and condescending toward the Indian population. His haplessness stems from his inability to understand the local culture and people, which is particularly evident when the main conflict of the novel unfolds: the accusation of Dr. Aziz by Ronny's fiancée, Adela Quested. Ronny's rigid adherence to colonial protocol and his personal prejudices make him unable to navigate the complex situation with fairness or empathy, highlighting the broader failures of the British administration. The subsequent events lead to the dissolution of his engagement to Adela and expose the deep-seated racial tensions of the time. Our school drama teacher, Mr Sharp, an Englishman himself, chose to highlight the racism of colonialism by controversially casting all British charaters with black Africans students, with dramatic impact!
