Dar es Salaam trader Alibey Curji was estimated to owe 55,000 rupees to Mailler, 15,000 rupees to DOAG, and 15-20,000 rupees to Hansing & Co., although he only had assets worth 15-20,000 rupees. Still OSwald & Co. was willing to provide him with a credit of 10,000 rupees.29 So Alibey Curji's volume of credit was five to six times higher than his assets.
