If you Google “Bahadur Madhani”, you see more than 6 pages of listings of his international volunteer work, including some in Mandarin (!) - you begin to appreciate why, in Canada, Bahadur is seen as one of the main faces of “volunteerism”!

And because we here at Khojawiki, consider such “civic” sewa as an important element of the traditional Khoja practice of giving back to the society where one receives roji living, we are extremely proud to salute Mr. Bahadur Madhani, for having the courage to break out of the parochial comfort zone of his own community and making such a huge difference in the “wider” world.

Raised in humble circumstances in a small Tanzanian town, Bahadur had to work extremely hard just to attain his basic education, often taking on menial jobs during high school, so as to ensure that his parents sacrifice in rural Singida paid off in terms of his effort.

Later, Bahadur continued to work, as an audit student, in the UK, qualifying as a Chartered Accountant in 1973 but with his aim set high, working his way through his studies, to qualify for a Fellowship in Chartered Accountancy in 1979.

As an immigrant to Canada in 1982, very early on, Bahadur defined his future success, in terms of both his professional and personal life. He has been President and Owner of Equiprop Management Ltd., a successful property management and real estate syndication company and at the same time, has been serving on the Directors’ Board of a Toronto Stock Exchange (TSE) listed pharmaceutical company, a national automotive supplies distributor and a prime real-estate development company.

In his personal life, Bahadur & his wife Parviz have given quality family time to their son, Jameel (graduated from the Ivey Business School in 2005 and owner of his own investment company) and daughter Farahnaaz (graduate of Wilfred Laurier University–2007 and a marketing executive), as well as mentored many young leaders of tomorrow. At the level of the Khoja Ismaili jamaat, his numerous “sewa” of over 50 years, has earned him the prestigious title of “Alijah”!

CIVIC VOLUNTEERISM

But it is in the art of volunteerism in the larger Canadian society, that Bahadur Madhani is a legend, setting a high benchmark, not only for thousands of immigrants but also inspiring many other Canadians to follow his example.

Committed to the belief that " a civil society needs more than just pursuit of self-interests-it needs caring and sharing," Bahadur has devoted a large portion of his active life and energy to public service.

“Doing something for someone who will not be able to repay”: this motto from his late father has guided Bahadur since he was 6 years old! Bahadur started his civic sewa early: “Cricket has been one of my passions. Navin Patel called me one day to say that he was planning to bring cricket to South Asians in Canada. I joined him and we organised a match at Skydome. West Indies team was World Champions in 1989 and that team also came. First time in United Way (an umbrella fund-raising group) history, the West Indians and the black community participated with us to raise funds for United Way. Over 40,000 people attended and we raised $650,000.”

From then on, there was nothing to stop Bahadur Madhani. He seized on every opportunity to continue with his resolve to help the needy and make a difference in their lives.

Bahadur has been involved with the YMCA Canada National Board since 2008 and his crowning achievement was to break a “ceiling” - to be the first Muslim in the world to be elected a National Chair of this major international Christian organization. “Bahadur’s dedication, honesty and respect exemplify what Canada is all about,” said Scott Haldane, President and CEO of YMCA Canada. “He is a knowledgeable and engaging leader and we are fortunate that he has agreed to serve as our Board Chair. Bahadur believes in the power of the YMCA to foster strong, healthy individuals who can become leaders within their own families, and in turn, to grow into leadership roles within the larger community.”

Bahadur has also served as the Chair of the United Way of Greater Toronto,(annual budget: $200m) and the Toronto Grants Review Team of the Ontario Trillium Foundation, which is the major funding arm of the Government of Ontario.

Being a personal friend of the late Nelson Mandela, he was the Chair of The Nelson Mandela Children’s Fund (Canada) for a number of years. Amongst his other volunteer services, Bahadur has served on the Boards of the Toronto 2008 Olympic Bid, the Royal Ontario Museum, the Advisory Board of the Toronto Community Foundation, and the Ontario Provincial Police Commissioner's Community Advisory Council.

And Canada’s civic society has been generous in recognizing his contributions.

Bahadur received the Order of Canada in 2010, as well as the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Medal and the Queen’s Golden Jubilee Medal. Bahadur has also received numerous awards for community service: The Indo-Canada Chamber of Commerce Humanitarian Award and The Lifetime Community Service Award from the South Asian Heritage Foundation and the Ismaili Award of Excellence for Community Service amongst others.

Bahadur Madhani's message to the over 55% of Greater Toronto population, who are immigrants: “There are many opportunities for us all. We have a huge capacity to make contribution to the society. If we do it selflessly and sincerely, and even though we seek no recognition, we will be recognised. Aspire for positions that can help us serve others. Let us, South Asians, celebrate our own successes, our victories and use our influence to make others take notice of us and what we can achieve”. Many have followed this advice and helped make Canada a great place that it is.

And it is not all work for Bahadur either. An avid golfer, Bahadur even has on his license plate “Bpinhi”! He travels globally for pleasure (and golf!) and is known in Toronto to be a fun party-goer.

Bahadur has recently retired from professional practice and enjoys some well-deserved time with new grand-daughter!!
