Originally from Kathiawar, from where they had to flee due to the famines of the 1840's, Bhimjibhai and many other Khojas moved to Sindh and settled in Hyderabad. His nickname was Kothari, meaning a granary merchant, which was likely his business in Kathiawar.
Later, like many Khojas small traders, he settled in the Omani-ruled port of Gwadar where he found an opportunity to purchase fish from the trawler owners, a trade that was shunned, for religious reasons, by the many Hindu traders settled in the area.
