The German Colonial Handbook 1903 mentions "Jamal Walji" as an Indian firm, resident in the German East Africa capital of Dar-es salaam in 1903. In supplementary volume released 1904, he is listed as "Ismail Valji". The 1908 edition of the German Colonial Handbook confirms that he was still trading in Dar es Salaam in 1908.
According to the community oral records, JJamal Walji was Mukhi (chief) of the Dar es Salaam Khoja Ismaili Jamat between 1892- 1902 & 1905-1908.
