The German Colonial Handbook Supplement 1904 mentions the firm of "Merali Ramtallah" as being ivory merchants in Bagamoyo in 1904. He is also listed in the German Colonial Handbook 1908 as an ivory merchant.

My paternal grandfather Merali Remtulla was a long time resident, trader of Bagamoyo In the late 1800’s until 1940’s, and also had shops in Tabora.

He married my grandmother Jenabai Merali Remtulla, daughter of Ladha Mawji of Zanzibar, while her brother Musa Ladha Mawji moved to Mombasa in the 1940’s.

The graveyard pictured in Shariffa Keshavji’s article is of my grandmother whose headstone carving are of my late father Gulamali Merali Remtulla. My maternal grandfather Abdullah Mohamed Dhanji and my grandmother Sikinabai Abdulla Mohamed Dhanji were also long time residents of Bagamoyo. My late mother’s siblings: Fatma, Zera, Roshan, Gulbanu (my mom) Yasmin, Malek and my only uncle Amir were all born in the same house near A. N. Kassam’s house.

The two graveyards shown in the articles are of my grandparents.
