Razia was born to parents, who were both teachers and faced the tempestuous times created by the partition of India & Pakistan. She remembers them as simple, frugal folk, who were constantly thinking about a safe country to make home. Her father had been a freedom fighter during British colonial rule in India and shortly after Independence, in 1947, he was fortunate enough to be recruited to teach in Uganda, Africa. After he was settled, the family followed in 1952 and Razia still remembers the trip on the crowded lower deck of S S Amra, from Porbander to Mombasa, Kenya.

After her schooling, Razia’s first job was from an advertisement in the "Uganda Argus" and was with a well-established printing press called “Somai Press”. The extensive experience she gained would lay the foundation for her future business success. Her employer remembers that her astute business sense and patience led him then to recognize that she was "future greatness waiting…"!
In 1964, Razia went to the United Kingdom to pursue teacher training and bulking the trend of many Asians to remain in the UK, she returned to Uganda to started her first business venture, a small kindergarten in Kampala.
Her faith in Uganda's future was not rewarded and soon, fate intervened in the form of Idi Amin, the Ugandan dictator, who divested hundreds of thousands of Asians of their property, businesses, money, jewellery etc and forcibly expelled them. Dejected but defiant, Razia resolved to make her dreams come true elsewhere. For her strength, she quotes Richard Bach's famous line "the death of the caterpillar is the birth of the butterfly".
Resettling in Canada as a penniless refugee with many of the Ugandans Asians See Ugandan Asian Refugee Movement 1972, Razia's first job was on the University of British Columbia campus with BC Research and National Council as Cost Administrator. But soon, she was into the very lucrative real estate business in British Columbia. An amicable divorce in the '80s, freed her to fully concentrate on ventures like the "The Bayshore Inn" situated in Waterton Lakes, Alberta, which she purchased in 1991, followed by the development, in 1998, of The Glacier Suites, another hotel, also in the astoundingly beautiful Canadian Rockies. Razia personally manages her businesses with her son Shameer, along with other family members.

As to her success, Razia confidently states the ethos of the Khoja "veyparis” businesspersons everywhere - "A piece of gold will retain its luster anywhere". Her advice to would-be immigrants to Canada is also drawn from the life-journeys of her community and is very practical "give up your old-fashioned ideas and notions and adopt this country as your very own. Be open to opportunity and see potential everywhere you go. If you wish to succesed in Canada, let your mind be like an open parachute....filled with dreams, powerful optimism and great ambition and I am sure you will land safely".
Not forgetting her responsibilities to her birthplace, Razia contributes tremendously of her time and money to the welfare of those less fortunate. Every year, as the head of a private charitable institution known as The Shukhar Foundation, a grass-roots volunteer-driven organization dedicated to helping with education, health and life issues of the ultra-poor Khoja Ismailis and others of Kutch and Kathiawar, Razia visits the homes of the poor, at great personal discomfort, to ensure that the donated funds contributed by her family and friends are properly employed in support of the needy.
