Yasmin Ratansi was the first Muslim woman in North America to be elected to a Parliament in 2004. She served in the Canadian House of Commons from 2004-2011. Currently, she is the nominated candidate for the federal Liberal Party to represent the riding of Don Valley East, in Toronto.

Both in business and in politics, Yasmin is considered by many to be a visionary and principled change-leader. She has been acknowledged professionally for her extensive experience in management consulting, interim leadership, multi-term government leadership and business turnarounds. Her personal skills and worldview combine to give her the ability to apply her strong business and political acumen and global perspective, to fortify and strengthen pluralism and diversity. Yasmin is one of the most interculturally competent people around.

Yasmin received her initial education in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania and then pursued further education in England. She continued her passionate commitment to life-long learning as a Canadian, pursuing her certification and designations as CGA (Certified General Accountant, CMC (Certified Management Consultant), and an ISO 9000 consultant. She is also a Risk Management consultant and earned an Internal Audit designation. While working for the Public Sector, Yasmin was chosen for the LEADS program, which was a joint venture between the Province of Ontario and Queen’s University where she received her Master’s equivalence in Public Administration.

Yasmin earned the reputation as a trailblazer in the early 1980’s when she was among only a handful of women conducting receiverships and controllerships within the domain of Canadian accounting practices.

Because she believes in giving back to the community, Yasmin has served on many professional and business boards, including the Institute of Management Consultants, CGA, CAMH (Centre for Addiction and Mental Health), CMC (Canadian Council of Muslim Women), the National Ethnic Business and Professional Association, GOPAC (Global Organization of Parliamentarians Against Corruption), WIHW (World Interfaith Harmony – UN designated week) among many dedications. She has also distinguished herself through her mentorship of many young and upcoming professionals providing them guidance on leadership development.

In recognition of her professionalism and community commitment, Yasmin her received many honors, including the President’s Award from CMC, the John Leslie Award from CGA, Top 100 Most Influential CGA’s, Fellowship from both CGA and CPA, Women Who Inspire Award City of Toronto Volunteer Award, etc.

MEMBER OF PARLIAMENT

Besides being the first Muslim woman to be elected in North America, Yasmin has also set the bar on many firsts:

First to win the riding of Don Valley East during a Minority Government;

First to be the only federal Opposition member to Chair two Standing Committees;

First to secure government funding, in the amount of $30 million, for the Global Centre for Pluralism in Ottawa.

During her tenure in Parliament, Yasmin worked with Parliamentarians around the globe on numerous issues of concern to Canada and its partners. Some of the issues she addressed included the correlation between poverty and corruption, donor fatigue, environmental degradation, women and human rights. We are pleased to report that Yasmin was elected to the Parliament of Canada in the recent elections.

She also worked on trade related issues, enabling the elimination of barriers and developing better partnerships with countries like Azerbaijan, Taiwan, etc.

She is currently the Principal owner at “Ethical Edge”, where she addresses issues of fiscal prudence within a social enterprise model, both for civil society and for Parliamentarians across the globe.

She is a member of the Audit team for GOPAC (Global Organization of Parliamentarian Against Corruption) and Vice Chair of the Canadian GOPAC.

We are very happy to note that in October 2015, Yasmin has been reelected to her position to the Parliament of Canada!
