Abdallah Bhai was born on a family "vaari" farm just outside of Mundra, one of 10 children of a family of small landowners, who lived relatively well for several generations. The daily school was followed by hard labour in the fruit, millet and sorghum vaari.
Mundra, on the Kutch coast, has a long history of sending its men to work in Africa (they have a saying “Kutch is so dry, even the scorpions want to migrate”). Brothers Mohamed & Abdalla Fazal went to Tanganyika where they had relatives.
He started work with Habib Adat Dewji in his import firm for several years. Habib Mukhi was so impressed that he offered his daughter, Shirin (Shilo) in marriage and they were married in 1943. Abdalla Bhai then worked in his own lumber business in Dar for many years.
It is said that Abdalla and Shilo could not have children then they went to a dargha in Kutch and after the appropriate "maanta", they had four children.
In 1949, he brought all his brothers, sisters and parents from Kutch to Tanzania but his father and mother returned home later as they did not like it in Africa.
