Our father was born in 1900 in Kutch, Mundra, India and emigrated to Africa in 1905 at the age of five. As a child, he used to have a tutor who came home to teach him religion only, this was because my Grandfather was a Mukhi there (in Kutch, Mundra) for 45 years. When my father came to Africa he wanted to learn English and enrolled at a Convent School. His written and spoken english was excellent and he was often called "A walking dictionary!"
My father was an extremely honest person with high principles. For example, he used to work as a foreman at a Clove farm in Zanzibar. His manager told him that they had to mix pebbles ("kakras') with the cloves to make the weight, which he refused to do and therefore left his job.
A couple of his sayings we remember are: "Be an asset wherever you go". And the other was, "If you feel someone is lying to you, tell that person 'I doubt your word' He was a great believer in justice and fought one particular case for Sakumasi's rights as a widow with our Council and won.
