Husseinali Bhai is 99 years of age, lives in Edmonton, Canada and says his motto in life is “Take everything as it comes”

This is a remarkable attitude for someone who lost two generations of wealth to the Ugandan dictator, Idi Amin and who was literally chased by armed soldiers upto the departure gates of the Entebbe Airport, before jumping onto United Nations rescue flights for Indians and left his country of birth with barely the clothes on his back!

Husseinali was born in Masaka, Uganda, where his father, originally a poor migrant from Vankaner, Kathiawar, had built a successful transport business, starting with a bullock-cart.

Husseinali went to the Agakhan School In Masaka and studied only up 7th Chopri Gujarati and as he was better educated amongst his siblings,then took over the accounts department for the growing transport business, appropriately called "Nurmohamed Jiwa and Sons”

When he was 20, (in 1940), his father arranged his marriage to Dolatkhanu Merali Thobani, who was born in Kampala but whose family was also from Vankaner. Husseinali Bhai says his father was quite liberal for his times and invited the whole Asian population of Masaka, about 200 people, to a feast of biryani and ladoos - the nikah ceremony was in the grounds of the old Jamatkhana - Community Centre and there was even a old gramophone playing Indian music!

The Jiwa family lived in large house on a hill and the street was eventually named "Nurmohamed Jiwa Street". As they got married, his brothers moved to other accommodations around their home but he stayed with his parents and eventually took over the home. In 1954, his father died and Husseinali Bhai became the General Manager of the company.

Husseinali was quite athletic, playing both cricket and soccer and was part of a mixed race soccer team called "Masaka Football Team”. As was the custom for the residents, Husseinali Bhai walked everywhere in that town- in fact, the family’s first passenger car was 1960, when he was almost 40 - which helps to explain his excellent health now.

His first child, Karim died at birth and another daughter, Parin also passed away in a road accident n 1972. But he has a son Abdalla, with whom he lives now and one daughter, Shenaaz, who lives in Toronto.

As was expected, he has served his community being on the Education and Health Committees and finally, becoming the Masaka member of the Uganda Ismaili Council. Later, he became President of the Masaka Ismailia Council.

But Husseinali Bhai also maintained very friendly relations with the local Buganda society and joined the political party of the Kabaka (Ruler), called Kabaka Yekka.

In 1969, he was elected to a position-Deputy Mayor of Masaka-that was to cause him much grief later.

In April 1971, when Idi Amin Dada staged a military coup, army officials came to his house and seized his passport, as he was the Genereal Manager of the fleet of 12 busses and they needed him to continue the transport business, which catered to the whole Masaka region. He was required to report to the police station every morning.

Husseinali Bhai did not panic and continued to maintain the fleet and the business. His own children were in Europe studying so it was only he and his wife in possible danger. The two of them continued to do their jamaati sewa and often had to feed the military officials in their own home. But there was general panic as the officers frequently would come to Asian homes and loot items of furniture etc. His brothers quietly started leaving town.

In September 1972, Francis Walugembe, the Mayor was murdered in cold blood by Idi Amin’s Special Research Bureau. (see: http://www.newvision.co.ug/new_vision/news/1318154/masaka-mayor-slain-betraying-kabaka) He was abducted, killed, hacked and then paraded through the town. It was at this point that Husseinbhai started to make his escape plans as he was warned that he would be next. He was routinely permitted go to Kampala to get spare parts for the busses and like most Asian Ugandan citizens, he had quietly made application for UN refugee travel documents for himself and his wife.

One day, he went through the entire routine of assigning drivers and routes, fuelling the busses etc. and generally carrying his role. He told his staff that he was headed to Kampala to buy some spares and left with his driver and a powerful Mercedes car. Husseinali Bhai left everything intact in Masaka. No personal jewellery, no large sum of money, no large suitcases on him or his wife. No one was told about his plans.

In Kampala, they went straight to the UN office to inquire about the next flight out. They was however, being followed and the driver soon came inside the building to warn them that army officials were demanding that they come outside and then driver also fled. Hussienali & Dolatkhanu exited through a side door and swiftly drove away to Entebbe airport, some 20 miles away. Fortunately for him, there was a heavy downpour along the way and the soldiers at the manned roadside barriers were sheltering inside the tents - so Husseinali Bhai crashed the barriers and drove right to the departure lounge, being chased by the soldiers. A customs inspector opened his suitcase but finding his Jubo-ceremonial robe on top, wished him well for his Hajj trip! Both Dolat and he managed to enter the UN safety zone where Idi Amin's soldiers were not allowed.

This began another phase of Husseinali Bhai’s life struggle and the source of his philosophy that destiny determines all.

They were flown to Italy to a camp, where the Ismaili Khojas set up a Jamat Khana in a church. After four months, they were assisted by the Red Cross to settle in London, England where Husseinali Bhai started a new career working in a paper mill laboratory for 17 years, retiring in 1985.

By now, both his children had emigrated to Canada and Husseinali Bhai and Dolatkhanu Bai went to live in London, Ontario for another 15 years of retirement. When Dolatkhanu Bai died in 2006, his children persuaded him to move in with his son in Edmonton, Alberta where he now lives.

He goes to the Jamat Khana every day, dressed in a smart jacket and keeps a sharp trimmed beard. In a city famous for its octogenarians, he is approaching a century and quite content with with what life has thrown his way.

યુગાન્ડાના સરમુખત્યાર, ઇદી અમીનને સંપત્તિની બે પેઢીઓ ગુમાવનાર અને એનર્બે એરપોર્ટના પ્રસ્થાન દરવાજા સુધી સશસ્ત્ર સૈનિકોએ ભારતીયો માટે યુનાઈટેડ નેશન્સ રેસ્ક્યૂ ફ્લાઇટ્સ પર કૂદકો મારતા પહેલા અને તેમના દેશને છોડી દીધો તે માટે આ એક નોંધપાત્ર વલણ છે. તેના પીઠ પર ભાગ્યે જ કપડાં સાથે જન્મ!

હુસેનાલીનો જન્મ મસાકા, યુગાન્ડામાં થયો હતો, જ્યાં તેમના પિતા, મૂળ વાંકાનેર, કાઠિયાવાડથી ગરીબ સ્થળાંતર કરતા હતા, તેમણે બળદ-કાર્ટથી શરૂ થતાં સફળ પરિવહન વ્યવસાયનું નિર્માણ કર્યું હતું.

હુસેનાલી મસાકામાં અકાખાન સ્કૂલમાં ગયા અને માત્ર 7 મી ચોપરી ગુજરાતી અભ્યાસ કર્યો હતો અને તેઓ તેમના બહેન વચ્ચે સારી રીતે શિક્ષિત હતા, ત્યારબાદ વધતા જતી પરિવહન વ્યવસાય માટે એકાઉન્ટ્સ વિભાગ સંભાળ્યો, જેને યોગ્ય રીતે "નર્મમોહેમ જિવા એન્ડ સન્સ"

જિવા પરિવાર એક પહાડ પર મોટા ઘરમાં રહેતા હતા અને શેરીને આખરે "નર્મમોહેમ જિવા સ્ટ્રીટ" નામ આપવામાં આવ્યું હતું. તેઓ લગ્ન કરી લીધા પછી, તેમના ભાઈઓ તેમના ઘરની આસપાસની અન્ય સવલતોમાં રહેવા ગયા, પરંતુ તેઓ તેમના માતાપિતા સાથે રહ્યા અને છેવટે ઘરે ગયા. 1954 માં, તેમના પિતા મૃત્યુ પામ્યા હતા અને હુસૈનાલી ભાઈ કંપનીના જનરલ મેનેજર બન્યા હતા.

અપેક્ષા મુજબ, તેમણે તેમના સમુદાયને શિક્ષણ અને આરોગ્ય સમિતિઓ પર સેવા આપી છે અને છેલ્લે, યુગાન્ડા ઇસ્માઇલી કાઉન્સિલના મસાકા સભ્ય બન્યા. બાદમાં, તેઓ મસાકા ઇસ્માઇલિયા કાઉન્સિલના પ્રમુખ બન્યા હતા.

પરંતુ હુસૈનલિ ભાઇએ સ્થાનિક બગંદા સમાજ સાથે ખૂબ જ મૈત્રીપૂર્ણ સંબંધો જાળવી રાખ્યા અને કાકાક (શાસક) ના રાજકીય પક્ષમાં જોડાયા, જેને કબાક યેકા કહે છે.

1 9 6 9 માં, તેઓ મસાકાના પદ-ડેપ્યુટી મેયર તરીકે ચુંટાયા હતા-તે પછીથી તેમને ખૂબ દુઃખ થવાનું હતું.

હુસૈનાલી ભાઈએ ગભરાઈ ન હતી અને કાફલા અને વ્યવસાયનું સંચાલન ચાલુ રાખ્યું નહોતું. તેમના પોતાના બાળકો યુરોપમાં અભ્યાસ કરતા હતા તેથી તે માત્ર અને તેની પત્નીને સંભવિત ખતરામાં જ હતા. તેમાના બંનેએ જામાટી સેવા કરવાનું ચાલુ રાખ્યું અને ઘણી વાર તેમના પોતાના ઘરમાં લશ્કરી અધિકારીઓને ખવડાવવાનું હતું. પરંતુ સામાન્ય ગભરાટ હતો કારણ કે અધિકારીઓ વારંવાર એશિયાના ઘરોમાં આવે છે અને ફર્નિચરની લૂંટ વસ્તુઓ આવે છે. તેમના ભાઈઓ શાંતિથી નગર છોડવાનું શરૂ કરતા હતા.

સપ્ટેમ્બર 1 9 72 માં, ફ્રાન્સિસ વાલુગેમે, ઇડી અમીનના સ્પેશિયલ રિસર્ચ બ્યુરો દ્વારા મેયરની હત્યા કરવામાં આવી હતી. એક દિવસ, તેમણે ડ્રાઈવરો અને માર્ગો સોંપવાની સમગ્ર રૂટિન પસાર કરી, બસની ઇંધણ વગેરે. અને સામાન્ય રીતે તેમની ભૂમિકા તેમણે પોતાના કર્મચારીઓને જણાવ્યું હતું કે તેઓ કેટલાક પૂરવઠા ખરીદવા માટે કમ્પાલા જવા નીકળ્યા હતા અને તેમના ડ્રાઇવર અને શક્તિશાળી મર્સિડિઝ કાર સાથે છોડી ગયા હતા. હુસેનાલી ભાઈએ મસાકામાં બધું જ અકબંધ રાખ્યું. કોઈ અંગત ઝવેરાત, કોઈ મોટી રકમ ન હોય, તેમને અથવા તેણીની પત્ની પર કોઈ મોટા સુટકેસો નથી. તેમની યોજના વિશે કોઇને કહેવામાં આવ્યું નહોતું

કમ્પાલામાં, તેઓ સીધો જ યુએનના કાર્યાલયમાં ગયા ફ્લાઇટની તપાસ કરવા માટે ગયા. તેમ છતાં, તેઓ અનુસરતા હતા અને ડ્રાઈવર તરત જ મકાનની અંદર આવી પહોંચ્યો હતો કે તેમને ચેતવવા માટે કે લશ્કરના અધિકારીઓ એવી માગણી કરતા હતા કે તેઓ બહાર આવે છે અને પછી ડ્રાઈવર ભાગી જાય છે. હુસૈનાલી અને ડોલતાખાહ એક બાજુના દરવાજાની બહાર નીકળી ગયા હતા અને ઝડપથી 20 માઈલ દૂર આવેલા એંટેબે એરપોર્ટ પર પહોંચી ગયા હતા. સદનસીબે તેમના માટે, રસ્તામાં ભારે વરસાદ પડ્યો હતો અને સૈનિકોએ માનવ રસ્તાની બાજુમાંના અવરોધો પર તંબુઓની અંદર રહેતી હતી - જેથી હુસૈનેલી ભાઈ અવરોધોને તૂટી ગયા અને સૈનિકો દ્વારા પીછેહઠ કરી રહેલા પ્રયાણ લાઉન્જના અધિકારને લઈ ગયા. એક કસ્ટમ્સ ઇન્સ્પેક્ટર તેના સુટકેસ ખોલી પરંતુ ટોચ પર તેના જુબૂ ઔપચારિક ઝભ્ભો શોધવામાં, તેમના હઝા ટ્રિપ માટે તેમને સારી ઇચ્છા! ડોલેટ બન્ને અને તેઓ યુએન સલામતી ઝોનમાં પ્રવેશી શક્યા જ્યાં ઇદી અમીનના સૈનિકોને મંજૂરી ન હતી.

આનાથી હુસૈનાલી ભાઈની જીવન સંઘર્ષનો અન્ય એક તબક્કો શરૂ થયો અને તેના તત્વજ્ઞાનના સ્રોતમાં નિયતિ બધાને નક્કી કરે છે.

તેઓને એક શિબિરમાં ઇટાલી મોકલવામાં આવ્યા હતા, જ્યાં ઇસ્માઇલી લખાણોએ એક ચર્ચમાં જમતખાનની સ્થાપના કરી હતી. ચાર મહિના પછી, તેમને લંડન, ઇંગ્લેન્ડમાં પતાવટ કરવા માટે રેડ ક્રોસ દ્વારા મદદ કરવામાં આવી હતી, જ્યાં હુસૈનેલી ભાઈએ 17 વર્ષ માટે કાગળ મિલ પ્રયોગશાળામાં કામ કરતા નવી કારકિર્દીની શરૂઆત કરી, 1985 માં નિવૃત્ત થયા.

હવે, બન્નેના બાળકો કેનેડામાં સ્થાનાંતરિત થયા હતા અને હુસેનાલીભાઈ ભાઈ અને ડોલતખાનુ બાઇ 15 વર્ષથી વધુ નિવૃત્તિના સમય માટે લંડન, ઑન્ટારીયોમાં રહેવા ગયા હતા. 2006 માં ડોલતખ્હાનબાઈનું અવસાન થયું ત્યારે, તેમના બાળકોએ તેમને તેમના પુત્ર એડમન્ટોન, આલ્બર્ટામાં ખસેડવા માટે સમજાવ્યા હતા જ્યાં તેઓ હવે જીવે છે.

તે દરરોજ જમતખાનામાં જાય છે, એક સ્માર્ટ જેકેટમાં પહેર્યો છે અને તીક્ષ્ણ ટ્રીમડ દાઢી રાખે છે. તેના ઓક્ટોજિનેસિસ માટે વિખ્યાત એક શહેરમાં, તે એક સદીની નજીક આવી રહ્યો છે અને જીવનમાં તેના માર્ગે શું ફેંકી દીધું છે તેની સાથે તે તદ્દન સમાવિષ્ટ છે.
