Issamamad Shivji in his own words

"I was born in a colonial, racially segregated, sectarian society. The Aga Khan Primary School in Kilosa was my first school in the fifties. Primary school then was for eight years. Now it is seven. The school was almost exclusively for Ismailis, a Muslim sect who consider the Aga Khan as their spiritual leader. Teachers were a mixed lot of Ismailis and a few non-Ismailis, all Asian Muslims."

Later, he went to Dar es Salaam for his secondary education.

He says "I spent the next six years at the Aga Khan Boys Secondary School, four of secondary and two of high school. This was from 1961 to 1966. The student population was still predominantly Asian, majority being Ismailis. The school had opened its doors to non-Ismailis and it began to get a steady stream of Africans just as the country was approaching independence. In my stream, we had only one African student in a class of 46 though there were many more Africans in other classes. Among the staff, many were Indian expatriates; there was a significant number of Tanzanian Asians and a small number of whites.."

" As the nationalist period grew, we had more enlightened white teachers. We also had Indian expatriates, who did not indulge in any politics’ but were very dedicated to their job and taught us well, maybe a bit too rigorously for our young minds. Mr MA Khan, teaching Physics, Mr Kabir and Mr Patwekar teaching Maths, Mr ‘Baby’John and Mr S Fernandes teaching Chemistry and several others; all have left fond memories. In Form IV, Mr Benerjee, most probably from Bengal, the land of Rabindranath Tagore, taught us literature. We read Dickens’ ever-fascinating novel through ages, and Gerald Durrell’s My family and other animals, the title of which has never ceased to amuse me."

Issa further writes " To this day, whenever Mr Fernandes, my former teacher, who lives in the neighbourhood pays me a visit, I instinctively stand up to greet him with a ‘sir’ though I never liked it when my university students addressed ‘sir’. I respectfully, perhaps not as attentively, listen to Mr. Fernandes, although I disagree with him vehemently"

After completing his Higher School Certificate, Issa joined the Faculty of Law at the University of Dar es Salaam in July 1967 as a student and never left until he retired 46 years later as a lecturer.

Issa Gulamhussein Shivji is a Tanzanian author and academic, and one of Africa's leading experts on law and development issues. He has taught and worked in universities all over the world. He is a prolific writer and researcher, producing books, monographs and articles, as well as a weekly column printed in national newspapers.

Shivji was for 36 years a distinguished professor in constitutional law in the University of Dar es Salaam's Faculty of Law. He is a professor of international renown, having built his reputation through the publication of over 18 books, numerous articles and book chapters.

Shivji has served as advocate of the High Court and the Court of Appeal of Tanzania since 1977 and advocate of the High Court in Zanzibar since 1989. He has received several national and international distinguished scholar awards, including an honorary doctorate from the University of East London, UK.

Shivji has devoted most of his life to addressing issues on the exploitation of Tanzanians through both the national and the international economic and legal orders.

Shivji presently occupies the Mwalimu Julius Nyerere Research Chair in Pan-African Studies of the University of Dar es Salaam. Most recently, he has been working on the political economy of economic reforms in Tanzania.

While mostly based in Tanzania, he has been visiting professor in various locations: El Colegio De Mexico, the University of Zimbabwe, the University of Warwick, the National Law School of India University, the University of Hong Kong, the Centre of African Studies of the University of Cape Town, South Africa, and CODESRIA, Dakar, Senegal.

Shivji earned his LL.M and PhD at the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) and the University of Dar es Salaam respectively. He also holds an LL.B from the University of Dar es Salaam in Tanzania.

"મારો જન્મ એક વસાહતી, જાતીય ભેદભાવ, સાંપ્રદાયિક સમાજમાં થયો હતો.કલોસામાં આગ ખાન પ્રાથમિક શાળા પચાસના દાયકામાં મારી પ્રથમ શાળા હતી ત્યારબાદ પ્રાથમિક શાળા આઠ વર્ષ સુધી હતી હવે તે સાત છે.શાળા લગભગ ઇસ્માઇલીઝ માટે લગભગ હતી, એક મુસ્લિમ સંપ્રદાય જે આગ ખાનને તેમના આધ્યાત્મિક નેતા તરીકે ગણે છે. શિક્ષકો ઇસ્માઇલીસ અને થોડા બિન ઇસ્માઇલીસ, બધા એશિયાઈ મુસ્લિમોનો મિશ્રિત મિશ્ર હતા. "
