Autobiographies of Mr & Mrs Gulamali Jina Madhavji

Transcribed, translated and authored by Zahir K. Dhalla, Toronto, ON (2017)

Preface by Zahir Dhalla

The narrative is based on recordings made by Gulamali's grandsons, Altaf Jina and Alkarim Jina in 1991 in Calgary, Alberta. It is not a transcript of those recordings but a write-up based on notes made by the author in English from the Gujarati. It is a story of much hardship and yet no words are found anywhere in the recordings expressing any bitterness. It was apparently just taken in stride. Gulamali's sense of humour comes through in the opening test words for setting the proper volume level:

Instead of the usual "Testing-one-two-three" he says "Thumri (which is same as tungi, earthen water pot) ma khali kankra" (literally, the water pot has only pebbles in it, being a technique ordinarily used to make what little water there is in it to rise). The metaphor is translated as "I have nothing left to tell you!"

1910-14 Lamu, Kenya: Birth, early years, family

Translator’s note: Lamu is a historic island, almost attached to the mainland, between Mombasa and the Somalia border. Trading dhows from Arabia, Persia and India that sailed up and down the East African coast would always stop at Lamu. Their Islamic background made it a town of almost exclusively Muslims. It now is a tourist destination because of its history and being on the warm waters of the Indian Ocean.

I was born in Paja (most likely Faza, the “P” and “j” being common Gujarati substitutions for “F” and “z”), Lamu na bhar ma (in the outskirts), about 10-15 miles from Lamu (most likely Pate Island where Faza is located). It's like Muheza is from Tanga. I was born in 1910 [father Jina having come from Gavidar, India by vaan (dhow) to Zanzibar in 1905, where he was helped by Itmadi Jiwan Lalji, who was a member of Ismaili Council when it was first established in 1905 to settle on the coast. Father had a small dukan (shop) in Paja. We were three children - two elder brothers had died, but we don't talk of those gone, only those alive: my elder sisters, Kursum (actually Kulsum, “r” being another common Gujarati substitution for “l”), married in Kigoma, and Leila, and myself. Relatives looked after the two girls. An African lady looked after me: I was doing maja (rejoicing) with the milk bottles she gave me. In 1910, there had been a chori (robbery) in the shop and father moved to Lamu.

Maa died in 1910 when I was only 10 days old. In those last 10 days, they really believed she would become okay but unfortunately that didn't happen. She was buried in Lamu. She had told father to look after the two girls as there was no hope for the boy, referring to me: "Chhokra ni asha nathi". Get the girls married then remarry yourself, maa told him on her death bed. In 1921, Leila was married to Ismail Keshavjee, our Tanga flats neighbour Babu Damji Keshavjee's brother. By then we had a stepmother.

1914-18 Morogoro, Tanganyika

'''Translator’s note: Morogoro, Tanganyika Morogoro is a town in the interior of the capital Dar es Salaam. It is at the foot of the cool Uluguru Mountains. Its importance was partly due to its being a junction in the rail network built by the Germans at the end of the 19th century. Agriculture was the basis of its economy.

In 1914, we went to Mombasa for deedar (audience with the Imam) but were told that Mowlana Sultan Muhammad Shah (Aga Khan III) had gone to Zanzibar so we proceeded there. While there, the father arranged a job (nokri mandhaiwi) with mama/shangazi (maternal uncle, shangazi in Swahili), Harji Nathoo in Dar es Salaam, working in a new dukan (shop) he opened in Morogoro.

In Zanzibar, Itmadi Jiwan Lalji's wife suggested since there were two girls and a young boy, we leave the elder Kursum to live with them while the (first) world war was raging and then later send for her when things were okay. So only my younger sister and I headed for Morogoro with my father. But the roads were closed during World War I. We went to Dar. Germans used to say tamaro sago awe chhe (that is, the British Army – an acquaintance of Aga Khan III - is coming). Incidentally, during this wartime, I caused a panic one time when I went away with our 'boy' to fetch water!

In 1918, the war was ending and we got a message from Jiwan Lalji in Zanzibar that the girl (Kursum) was now older and marriage proposals were coming. We went to Zanzibar for her wedding. Kaka's - mota bapa’s – son (maternal uncle’s son), Popat Kassam [Madhavji], also came there from Tanga. He said to father to come to Tanga, meet his elder brother, Kassam who had just come from India less than a month ago with his son and daughter, and then if he wished, he could go back to Morogoro.

The wedding in Zanzibar went to 'first class'. There were no cars, only narrow gali/guchis (alleys). We used Jiwan Lalji's goda gadi (horse buggy) to go to Kalamu.

By this time, British no wawto chadi gayo (the Union Jack had gone up, in Tanganyika that is).

1918-22 Tanga, Tanganyika

'''Translator’s note: Tanga, Tanganyika A coastal town near the Kenya border, it was a port where the German Tanga-Moshi railway line terminated. The Tanga area became very prominent after the Germans smuggled and transplanted sisal from Mexico. It was successful to the extent that Tanga became the world's largest producer. It was very popular with German settlers because of sisal and the proximity of the cool, fertile Usambara Mountains, with Lushoto town (German name Wilhemstaal) as their center.

We went by vaan (dhow) from Zanzibar/Dar to Tanga. We stayed at Popat Kassam's, near the jamat khana. His business was watches and repairs. He helped the father set up dukan (shop). For 6 rupees, you got a whole tako (roll) of Marikani (American cotton cloth), khaki Stockport for 75 cents a yard. He stocked 600-700 rupees of maal (goods) on credit from whole-sellers in town, including kanga (printed cotton shawl) There were three of us: father, sister and myself.

In 1920 father remarried a divorcee. Jamal Hemraj had his sister Khati divorced. He also had a brother, Dharamsi Hemraj. He ran a goods transport business – haath gadi (hand cart).

My sister was 20 years old when she married Ismail Keshavjee Rana, who worked in Alibhai Hasham Jeraj's kapad dukan (cloth store) near the jamat khana. There were 200-300 Ismailis.

Within a year of her marriage, a son was born but within ten days, even before mathu dhoe (which is ahead cleansing ritual after delivery and before going to jamat khana for chhanto, holy water sprinkling), she died. Her son was adopted by Hashu Suleman's sister, Visram Kanji na ghar ma hati (in Visram Kanji’s household) but he too died within 3 months.

After dukan in gam (downtown), we opened a ration store in Ngamiani, selling rice, daal (lentils) and bread - buying bread at 10 for 1 rupee, selling them at 11 cents each, thus one of every ten loaves was for our consumption. The rent for the shop was 20/=, renting from some sherio (from Msheheri, Yemeni, in Swahili). Daily revenue was about 10 rupees. When father went to jamat khana I sat in the shop where there would be 2-3 rupees of rations sold, some buying tel (cooking oil), others cigarettes. When bread did not sell they would go dry and we would have to sell them cheap.

In 1922, business not being good, though at the same time the cost of living was not much, for example, a gunny sack of rice was 6/= or 3 rupees and a dabo (container) of ghee 10 rupees, ghaslet (kerosene) 3 rupees for a dabo, father found a nokri (job) in Moshi.

1922-24 Moshi-Ngomeni-Tanga-Moshi, Tanganyika

Translator: Moshi, Tanganyika A town at the foot of snow-capped Kilimanjaro, Africa's highest and world’s tallest free-standing mountain, it was where the German Tanga-Moshi railway line terminated. The Moshi area was a very successful coffee-growing area and again popular with German settlers because of the proximity of the cool lower slopes.

In 1922, seeing there wasn't enough coming out of the shop bapa nokri madhaiwi (arranged a job) with Tanga's big wepari (businessman) Abdulrasul Somji (Tanga’s first Mukhi in 1905) in his shop in Moshi at 600 rupees plus boarding and lodging. In all, Abdulrasul Somji had 3 shops in Tanga, and shops in Muheza, Korogwe, Moshi and Arusha, using newcomers from India to run these at 200 rupees per annum. During a 12-month period, they would get advances (khatha) which later were settled against salary at period end.

The shop that father looked after was later sold back to the previous owner, Hassam Ismail.

This was the Hassam Ismail whose grandson is an advocate in Moshi. So, we went to Masoka in Moshi's hinterland at a Greek's coffee plantation. But there wasn't much business in that shop. So Abdulrasul Somji brought us back to Tanga to start a new shop at Ngomeni, a railway stop just west of Tanga. As always, the money was not sufficient, and then there was a burglary, and with all these worries father became sick. Popat Kassam took him to a Greek doctor and he got well. Then he started another shop for the second time in Ngamiani. That was in 1922.

Jina bapa heran bau thya (experienced much trouble) ever since maa died. In Lamu, he would go around with beads in a tin box, shouting “Ushanga, kila sampuli” (beads, of all types, in Swahili) and sell them to natives who would buy 1/2 paisa worth, as compared to here in Tanzania where one would sell at a gulio (open-air market in Swahili), but kharcho nikre nai (expenses could not be covered). Things were relatively better in Tanga, goods being available on credit and Kassam kaka helping. We sold sugar, pili pili (red chilli powder in Swahili), bizari (black pepper in Swahili) which we filled and sold in small packets. That was in 1921. Father remarried, then got my sister married. Father didn't have any moodi (capital) We then had a shop in Ngamiani. We would buy ek franslo (= 35 lbs) of chokha (rice), a dabo (container) of tel (cooking oil), but not a whole one because we didn't have enough money. After parodie (morning meditation), we would buy 11 loaves of bread selling 10 of them at cost, that is we would keep one loaf for ourselves.

After that, we went to Moshi, then Masoko. Popat Kassam said I should stay with them in Tanga for my schooling, Gujarati was the medium of instruction. After finishing 4 chopadis (literally notebooks, meaning grades), we went again to Moshi. Retail licenses had been stopped.

There was a relative in Ngamiani, our second shop, who would go to a gulio (open air market) in Muheza and bring back oranges and sell them to families in Tanga. He would come to father and say give me 2 rupees for oranges delivered, sometimes saying 2 rupees will not be enough today and would come collecting in the evening. But again, things were not good, so father went to Moshi for a second time at a salary of 1,000/=.

Later, I used to go to Muheza's gulio to buy 5-6 pakacha (baskets of coconut leaves, in Swahili) of fruit - oranges, tangerines, bananas, sugar cane, sleeping the night at the market. In the morning, I would have chai rangi (literally colour in Swahili, meaning black tea), there was no milk, at a native stall. I was 12-13 years old. That was in 1922-3.

I went with father to his second sojourn in Moshi, this time working for Kassamali Brothers after Abdulrasul Somji went bankrupt and his sons began business under this new name, at another of their shops in Kiboshi, a few hours from Moshi. After finishing his year there, we went to Dar for deedar in 1923.

Stepmother gave birth to Badru in 1925.

1925-28 Morogoro, Tanganyika

In 1925, we opened a shop in Morogoro. Merali Daya - Musaria, atak (family name) from Changachela - had invited us. We rented a house for 300 rupees. We stayed there until 1928.

While there, we received a letter from (future father-in-law) mama (maternal uncle) Rajabali Rawji of Kilwa - he was Jamal Rawji's brother whose son Mohamed Jamal Rawji lived in Tanga, asking us to come to Dar es Salaam so that we could wiwa nu kaam patawie (complete the wedding arrangements), something that had been previously arranged - we had a sagpan (relationship) with them - during deedar (audience with the Imam) in 1925.

In 1928, at the age of 18, I was married by Prince Aly Khan to Kursum Rajabali Rawji. My sister, Kursum Rawji came to the wedding and who later said for us to come with her to her hometown Kigoma.

We closed shop in Morogoro, getting goodwill of 300/=, and went to Kigoma. Brother-in-law Rawji had a machine in a sisal estate near there.

1928 Kigoma, Tanganyika

Translator’s note: Kigoma, Tanganyika A town on the shores of Lake Tanganyika, Africa's deepest and the world’s second deepest lake, it was a port where the German-built Dar-Kigoma railway line terminated. On the opposite shore and to the south was Albertville (now Kalemie) in Belgian Congo, and hence Kigoma was a strategic as well as an important trading town. Usumbura (now Bujumbura, at the north end of Lake Tanganyika, in Burundi) ma sado kam karto hato (where Gulamali’s wife's brother worked).

But after a couple of weeks there, father said we can't stay at daughter's, let me find some work. He (my sister's husband) said to father not to worry, gave him money - 2,000 rupees – and told him that it was bhat/chokha (lentil/rice) season, and to buy and sell them.

Translator’s note: Ujiji on the shores of Lake Tanganyika is where Dr. David Livingstone lived in the latter part of the 19th century and where it is said his heart lies buried while his body is buried in Westminster Abbey in London, England.]

We went to Ujiji to set up shop. That was in 1928. But after a few months, the father was anxious to go back to Tanga. Rawji had a brother in Dodoma who made trips to Tanga to sell cooking oil. He phoned him to say that his father-in-law and his son and daughter-in-law needed a ride, and that they would just spread their groundsheet and mattresses on top of the oil cans and ride in the back, and will pay 100 rupees, which Popat Kassam on arrival in Tanga paid at father's request. We began the journey at night arriving in Tanga in the morning.

1929 Ngomeni, Tanganyika

A European (German) had come to Popat Kassam's shop in Tanga to have the glass cover of his watch replaced. He asked if there was someone available to set up a shop at his plantation, where there was a vacancy, and accommodation was included. That was in 1929. [Son Sadru added to the translator: Father's shop in Ngomeni Estate was in the sisal workers' kambi (camp in Swahili). There was a sisal research station there. Gulamhusein Karsan of Tanga had a shop in Ngomeni town.]

Father in the morning, after jamat khana (where he slept in darkness full of mosquitoes, like in a jail, no windows), would go to Popat Kassam's shop. Up to that time, there were separate jamat khanas for males and females. I slept at Jamal Hemraj's, the father coming first there for breakfast before going to Popat Kassam.

On Monday, father went by train to Ngomeni station to wait for the European's sisal lorry to take him to the plantation on its return journey. He saw a corrugated iron sisal go-down (warehouse) and not much else – kain josh nathi (there is no activity), but he said wandho nathi (not to worry) and proceeded to obtain goods from Popat Kassam of about 1,000-1,500 rupees, rations chokha (rice), marage (beans in Swahili), and cloth. Hasham Suleman, of the transportation business in Tanga, had a bus service to Ngomeni which cost 15 shillings. We went there on Mondays.

We did 1000-1500 rupees of business per week, with a 10% profit. We found out that we had to pay rent of 50 rupees because only the initial stay was free but after we liked everything and decided to stay, we had to pay rent!

We were four of us: father, his wife, me, my wife. We slept in the storage room among the rice, and marage gunny sacks, all in one room.

The owner C. H. Reder, of the Kibarange Estate, would issue chits to his native workers directing Jina Bapa to give them maal (goods) of say 10 rupees. But this credit would accumulate and so we explained the problem to Reder. Then we consulted Abdul Rasul, who said to show it to his advocate who in turn talked to Reder who in turn took exception to it but nevertheless started to settle his account weekly, coming on Mondays with a kothri (bag) with a silver note.

But then the shop owner told us to vacate it at the end of the month, saying it was because we had taken steps to sue him.

1930-77 Tanga, Tanganyika

Machungwa Business

So, we moved back to Tanga, in Ngamiani's 6th / 7th Street selling machungwa (oranges in Swahili). Popat Kassam came by one day and said aa machungwa wenchwu apnu kaam na hoi (this orange-selling is not our work). He had rented a retail space near his own shop for us at 15 rupees a month. He said just go there and introduce yourself. All Ismaili shops were near jamat khana.

Shop in Popat Kassam's place in Ngamiani

This was in 1931. Popat Kassam putano makan hato (had his own building) in Ngamiani. He said go and 'sit' there, no rent, it has only shop space. We vacated our current shop, getting 2,000/= for it. After tea, I went to check out the new place and found boxes of watches and stuff that my brother (first cousin, Popat Kassam) had stowed there. So, I told father this will not work, where do I put my stuff? So, we told Popat Kassam and ene chadi gai (his temper rose), khijai gia (became upset), dungri gandhai gai (literally his onion smelled foul, meaning it stunk). Popat Kassam commented: mara nasib ma to jas chhe nathi tamaro (it is not my fortune to have any gratitude from you). He removed his stuff.

But he said if you want, come with me to Mombasa to buy goods. He had a purchase license to do so, while we only had a small 50/= license, his being 300/=. He told his supplier in Mombasa that this is my brother, give him goods under my name.

Business was good at Christmas time. I would obtain oil, inflatable dolls, air bells, and other fancy goods. We would sell a 2-rupee item for 5/=. But one white man's wife noticed that the same item was at 15/= at Popat Kassam's. The white man complained to him that his wife got it for only 5/=. Popat Kassam in turn complained to us that we will ruin his business and he forbid us to obtain goods from Mombasa under his name anymore.

His clients included many whites who would look in his showcase and could afford to pay his prices. Also, his expenses were big too. Our clients only included whites around Christmas, the rest of the time it was Ismailis. We would sometimes sell for even less because the customers could not afford it, 2/= 3/=. Previously, we used to sell bread such that after selling 10 loaves one loaf would be free for us. But you can't survive on that.

To obtain goods from Mombasa, we approached Gulamali & Akberali Merali, sons my mama (maternal uncle) who had a license. We bought birika (kettles in Swahili), cups and saucers. We also bought goods from Dar. We paid Mohamed Jamal, broker, once a month. Merikani (American cotton cloth) 6/= a roll, 5 rolls of khaki Stockport. 150 rupees for a gantni (stone grain-grinder). I really enjoyed selling on credit, including selling on credit to retailers in Muheza, Korogwe. Some would not pay, khai gyo (literally, ate it). But, otherwise, it generally was running okay. Business was good in Tanga, which I ran, old father helping.

Family Grows

Fateh was born in Tanga in 1931. In 1933, son Sadru was born in Kilwa, my wife's hometown. Then my brother Abdul was born in Tanga, a month later. Then my daughter, Roshan in 1936, followed by my youngest brother Nurdin. Sultan was born in 1939. More than 10 souls lived under one roof.

In 1941, we moved to Mohamed Tharoo's makan (building) in Ngamiani as we were living in cramped quarters in town, some of us sleeping in the balcony. Mohamed Jamal told us to do so, for business as well as residential space. There were two parts to the building, one his son-in-law, Kassamali Ebrahim Hajee would take, the other us, splitting the 300/= rent.

Then there were 14 jiv (souls) - father, wife, me, wife, brothers Badru, wife, their sons, Mohamed and Nizar (their girls were born after my father passed away), Abdul, Nurdin, children Fateh, Shamshu, Sadru, Roshan, Sultan – 15, counting Shamshu (passed away in infancy) - living under one roof. Badru's Mohamed and Nizar were born in our house.

Aga Khan III's Golden Jubilee in Nairobi, Kenya

In 1936, we went by train to Nairobi for Imam Sultan Muhammad Shah's Golden Jubilee, father, his wife, myself, my wife, sons Fateh and Sadru, young brothers Badru and Abdul. We went from Tanga to Moshi, then waited for another train arriving from Taveta in Kenya. We went from Moshi to Taveta to Mombasa where my sister Kursum, her husband and two children had arrived. From there we went to Nairobi. My brother-in-law had rented a place for 200 rupees in an old bank building. The Imam gave us blessings.

We returned to Mombasa, intending to return to Tanga by road. But there was flooding on the road at the border at Lunga Lunga where we had to spend the night.

Family: Death, Remarriage, Growth

My first wife died in a misdelivery in 1940. Son Sultan was only one year old. In 1942, I remarried. My step-mother had been complaining every day that should she be looking after her children or mine – that is, her four and my four. She said rasodo moto thai gayo. (literally, the kitchen has become big).

The house was now small for a big family. Father said he was going to look for a place to rent as this place was no longer big enough. I said no since we did not have the shakti (ability/means), we will make do. I said to him you live up and I will live down in the go-down (warehouse) behind the shop. Thus, my daughters Naz and Nargis were born in the go-down.

When the Hindu-Musalman phat (partition) happened in India (in 1947), we too later had a phat in our shop. Badru was in love and was married by Mowlana Sultan Muhammad Shah during Diamond Jubilee in Dar in 1946 to Sherbanu. His three sons were born in the building by 1949. I rented a shop and residence for Badru, who bought his goods from Mombasa on my name, sometimes coming along with me. It was Jamal Hemraj's building, behind my place. His three daughters were born there. And at ours, Parviz and Azim were born.

Fateh was chronically sick. He had chest-respiratory problems from birth. His chest was always infected. He had an operation in Morogoro where he had gone to with father, staying at Merali Devani. The treatment did not help. In 1954, he was very sick. We went to Nairobi for treatment where he was operated on but he died. We signed the burial papers but the Popat Kassam sons said we ought to bury him in Tanga. Hasnu Popat Kassam arranged to bring Fateh's body from Nairobi for burial in Tanga. He was brought by plane for 1,500/= and had all the burial ceremonies and services done. Father died in 1955, step-mother had died six months earlier.

1945-46, Kamadia

I was chalu kamadia (congregation deputy chief) of Tanga. I did not have jos (force/energy) but I had accepted the hodo (appointment), father saying khuda (god) will give us. The big shots – the varas (a title) – apnu maan ochun rakhe (didn't have much respect for us), saying he does not have jos so he will do.

Tanga JK Old png.png

Imam Sultan Muhammad Shah visited Tanga in 1945. I went to Mukhi Merali Ramji in Mombasa, who was providing the Imam with a chauffeured car for his visit all the way to Uganda. I requested him to lend us the car for 2-3 days for the visit to Tanga. He agreed, saying find an Asian driver. I said I'll go back to Tanga bring Sultan Hasham Suleman, who had driven for the Imam during a previous visit. Sultan went to Mombasa with Habib Taxi to fetch the car. The Tanga jamat said kamadia saheb motor lai avya (brought) from Mombasa for the Imam’s visit in 1945.

We went to the customs area. Imam Sultan Muhammad Shah had come by steamer. Council president sat in the rear with the Imam, another council member in the front. No one called us Mukhi/kamadia (chief / deputy). Imam finished all kam (services) including bait-ul-khayal (literally, house of meditation, meaning early morning congregation) We did mehmani (gifting) and Imam spent a lot of time with the jamat (congregation) asking what they were doing.

The Imam's work done, he got in the car to head back to the steamer, the council president sitting beside him, and the mukhi in front, which was his haq (right). I was standing near the car. Imam asked mera kamadia kidhar hai? (where is my kamadia? in Hindi/Urdu) I said ji khudavind (yes, blessed of god). He told the mukhi, tum ooth jao, kamadie ko beth ne de (you get off, let kamadia sit.) Mukhi Husein Dharamsi (Kassamali Dharamsi's brother) got out and let me sit in, I without my shoes on as we had just stepped out of the jamat khana and as Imam had just ordered me to get in, how was I to go back looking for my shoes.

After we took the Imam for a town tour, we headed back to customs. The white officers were wondering who this shoe-less mawali (unkempt) was with the Aga Khan, who had placed his hand on my shoulders. We all sat in the mashua (boat) and went to the steamer from where the captain and Mata Salamat watched our approach. At the steamer's narrow stairway, the Imam told me tum agar thao (you go ahead). I proceeded up the stairs and after a few shoe-less steps, the Imam asked joota kae ko nai pera? (how come you are not wearing shoes?). Sultan (Popat Kassam) just days ago asked me if I remembered this question. We went up and got blessings and returned.

In 1946, we went to Dar for Mowlana Sultan Muhammad Shah's Diamond Jubilee, when I was given the title of Huzur Mukhi.

1946 Prosperity

My business was doing good. Kanga (printed cotton shawl, in Swahili) control was lifted and I was able to get them from Zanzibar. On Sundays, I collected money for goods sold on credit.

I bought an African client's mother's bungo (dilapidated), a mochi (cobbler) was renting it at 40/= in 1950, for 40,000/=. I spent another 10,000/= to make it a free-hold property. But the government stipulated a condition for registering the transfer: a new building had to be built as the old one was no longer stable. So, I made sodo (deal) with Abdulrasul Fazal Moloo (who was working in an Advocate's office) for 80,000/= to build a new building (Azim Mansion), for which I got a mortgage from Daimond Jubilee Trust. Varas Jeraj Shariff was the agent for the Trust. He had previously built Hasham Suleman's building, among others. A Hindu contractor did the construction; that company eventually failed.

1955 Aga Khan Flats

Then the Aga Khan Flats were constructed in the mid-50s but I could not get one because I already had a building. So, we bought one under Sadru's name [Flat No. 37].

Badru chacha also bought the adjoining flat [Flat No. 38] after we had bought Sadru's. He had run his own business after bapa died, then wound it down. We needed to buy a flat because the school was there. Naz and Nargis went to school in a taxi, Habib's cab coming in the morning and bringing them back for lunch and again the same in the afternoon. It cost us 100/= a month. So, we bought a flat in the Aga Khan Flats from a Zanzibari, who had paid 5,000/= for it plus five years of payments for another 5,000/=. And he wanted goodwill of 5,000/=. So, we paid him 15,000/= and we paid 10,000/= for the remaining purchase price to the original purchaser Sadru Popat Kassam, for a total of 25,000/=. We rented out Azim Mansion and moved in in 1962.

1965 Trip to Pakistan and India

The Waljis had built a big building in Tanga for 800,000/=. I was Walji's mama (maternal uncle). Waljibhai was good company in Tanga, going to films, Ras Kazone.

We went on a trip to India/Pakistan with Waljibhai in 1965. Through exchange control, we got 1,500 rupees for the three of us including my daughter Yasmin. We went to Pakistan and some relation of Walji came to pick us up. We all went to his apartment in Karachi. We got off but left our bags behind in the taxi which took off. We were about to call the police when the taxi came back with our bags.

In Karachi, we went about town, saw films. We went to Agra, India to see the Taj Mahal but we could not find space in any hotels, there was some big event going on. Then Walji found a place for rent but first had to check that the toilet was not the squatting type as he had problems with his legs. We rented the place.

Madaf (unripe coconut in Swahili) was 5 rupees, much more expensive than in Tanga. We would go to buy fruits by taxi including safarchand (apples, tangerines) – Waljibhai was very fond of fruits.

We didn't go to Kashmir because of snow and cold. Abuali Missionary, who we happened to meet in Karachi said to go by air, but if you go by train, you will be able to see the places along the way.

We went to our ancestral home town Gavidar in Gujarat, India, to see our old building and Popat Kassam's. There was chicken and goats. We would not drink the milk because it was unsafe. They laid out a table and chairs and said to us to relax and enjoy the breeze. Next to the river was a levee for containing any flooding.

In Bombay, we would have breakfast at a hotel, paying separately for it, while paying 50 rupees separately for the room. We then would take taxis back to Jina bapa's place. A woman was engaged to do laundry and house-cleaning.

There was a lot more poverty in India, compared to Pakistan. There were child beggars everywhere but if you gave to one, a whole crowd would gather. I would give 50 cents, people telling me 10 cents is what I ought to give, I wonder what can they do with just 10 cents. Agra, we went by car, took pictures, had lunch. Meanwhile, the driver went away to get drunk and never came back. What to do? We didn't know anything about him, we were just told that he knows the place and would take care of us and not to worry. So, we hired another car, and we reported the incident. But it was not wise to argue especially with Punjabis.

We also visited Waljibhai's relations.

1970 Winds of Change

Licenses for getting maal (goods) from India were restricted. Sadru went for a visit to China via Japan with future kamadia Abdulsultan. They bought maal in China. We took out credit from the bank to pay for it. Thereafter, we imported directly from China.

Naz was sent to Nairobi for studies, but there always was a threat of people reporting us for sending money outside the country (Kenya) to our daughter.

Sadru applied to go to Canada and was accepted.

I cancelled our shop’s ‘Limited’ designation, running our business as a home business. But we did not cancel it officially, just unofficially. It was a three-way partnership, 30% Sadru, 30% my wife and 40% myself. Sadru left the shop and residences with me and headed off to Canada. We also had a property in Pakistan.

I sold both residences, mine for 20,000/=, Sadru's for 60,000/=. We sold them out of fear of nationalization but it was not necessary as it never happened. Azim Mansion, we sold for 150,000/= to a Bohra client in Korogwe. We had handed it over to our accountant for him to settle the payment after which we would sign. Sadru phoned us from Canada that he had received payment. We told him that after its deposit in his account was confirmed to let us know that the “medicine has been received”.

We then left for Toronto without signing the papers because they were with the accountant. He got 200,000/= of which we told him to keep 50,000/= as his fee. Our portion amounted to $6,000!

That was in April 1978.
